Recap of the 2024 Intercity Visit to Anderson and Spartanburg

The visit was an invaluable opportunity to build relationships among our local leaders while exploring new ideas and best practices from the cities we visited.

The Greater Summerville/Dorchester County Chamber of Commerce recently embarked on a three-day Intercity Visit to Anderson and Spartanburg, South Carolina. This exciting trip included leaders from the Chamber, the Town of Summerville, and Dorchester County, all coming together with the common goal of learning and collaboration.

The visit was an invaluable opportunity to build relationships among our local leaders while exploring new ideas and best practices from the cities we visited. Throughout the three days, we engaged in discussions on a range of topics crucial to our community’s development, including addressing homelessness, tackling childcare issues, managing growth, encouraging recreation, and building trust and collaboration within our local institutions.

We are especially thankful for our sponsors: HTI and BlueCross BlueShield of SC.

In Spartanburg County, we were inspired by their innovative approaches to homelessness and child care. Their community-driven solutions and partnerships with local organizations provided us with fresh perspectives on how we might tackle similar challenges in Dorchester County. We also explored their growth management strategies, which balanced economic development with maintaining the character and livability of their community.

Anderson offered us a deep dive into the importance of trust and collaboration. We observed firsthand how their leadership fosters a cooperative spirit among diverse stakeholders, leading to successful community initiatives and projects.

The collaborative efforts between the public and private sectors in both Andreson and Spartanburg served as a model for us to emulate back home.

As we return to Dorchester County, we aim to bring these ideas and practices to life within our community. We are committed to exploring new opportunities for improvement, leveraging the insights gained from Anderson and Spartanburg to enhance the quality of life for all our residents.

This Intercity Visit has reinforced the importance of continuous learning and partnership. We look forward to implementing these new strategies and fostering a more collaborative, innovative, and thriving Dorchester County.

Stay tuned for more updates as we work together to make our community an even better place to live, work, and play.
