With a record number of submissions this year, the judges faced the difficult task of selecting winners from an exceptional pool of nominees. Let’s dive into the stories behind the 2024 award recipients.

Emerging Leader of the Year: Tiffany Johnson-Wilson

Tiffany Johnson-Wilson, founder and CEO of Johnson & Wilson Real Estate Company, is a trailblazer in the real estate industry. Under her leadership, the company has introduced innovative programs like "Hometown Heroes," which supports service members, teachers, and first responders, and the "Lease Buyout Program," designed to help renters transition to homeownership.

Volunteer of the Year:  Anna McSwain

Anna McSwain, Marketing & Investor Relations Administrator for Dorchester County Economic Development, has made an indelible impact on the community through her volunteer efforts. She regularly contributes her time to event production and fundraising for nonprofits like Charleston Southern University, Summerville Baptist Church, and The Ark of SC. Her talent as a professional photographer has also benefited families and organizations throughout the region.

In 2023, Anna showcased her dedication by participating as a professional dancer in "Dancing with the ARK Stars," raising critical funds for Alzheimer's care. Additionally, she has served as a dance instructor, choreographer, production assistant, and cheer coach for local nonprofits and children’s recreation leagues. Anna’s enthusiasm for creating cherished memories and her dedication to community service exemplify the qualities of a true volunteer leader.

Trailblazer of the Year:  Kate Speciale

As Director of Surgical Services at Summerville Medical Center, Kate Speciale has been a transformative leader. Under her guidance, the hospital’s surgical program has expanded by 37%, adding services like pediatric general surgery, comprehensive spine care, and Level II trauma care to meet the growing needs of the community.

Kate’s community impact extends beyond her professional achievements. A 2019 Leadership Dorchester graduate, she played a pivotal role in raising $150,000 for a STEAM lab at Summerville Elementary School. She also serves on the HCA Healthcare Surgical Services National Advisory Board, contributing to the advancement of healthcare practices nationwide. Kate’s visionary leadership and commitment to excellence have set a high bar for others to follow, making her a standout trailblazer.

Nonprofit of the Year: Beyond BASIC Life Skills. This award was sponsored by  EcoSteris, Inc.

Beyond BASIC Life Skills is a nonprofit that empowers adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities through hands-on training, education, and community engagement. Their programs build confidence and foster independence, enabling participants to achieve their fullest potential.

The organization’s inclusive approach stands out—participants are called "Teammates," while staff are "Team Captains," reinforcing a culture of equality and shared responsibility. Beyond BASIC’s initiatives, such as Beyond Handcrafted—an inclusive gift shop—and a vending machine business, provide practical job skills and employment opportunities for Teammates.

By challenging stereotypes and advocating for inclusive hiring practices, Beyond BASIC not only supports its participants but also educates the broader community on the value of inclusion. Their work exemplifies the transformative power of community-driven initiatives.

With a 174-bed capacity, the facility offers emergency care, surgical procedures, cardiac services, and more. In 2023, they provided over $53 million in charity care and invested more than $50 million in local taxes, underscoring their dedication to the region’s well-being. Their innovative healthcare solutions and commitment to reducing disparities make them a beacon of excellence.
